Opening: 25. 10. 2023, 7 p.m.

Curator: Jiří Ptáček

Jiří Thýn will present in the Fait Gallery a brand new photographic series Love Life. The dialogue he opens up leads to a contemplation over a particular issue. He presents the subjects in his work from different angles and it follows in the tracks of contemporary Czech post-conceptualism.

If we were to find a common denominator of the collection that Jiří Thýn presents for the first time at the exhibition entitled Love Life, it would probably be a pictorial contemplation of the possibility and impossibility of distancing from the situations and events that surround us. “Is it possible to move away from the tragedies the visual echoes of which reach us from all sides? Is it possible to ascend to the orbit of the Earth and look at everything that happens on it without bias? Is certain timelessness decent to those who live in the present? Doesn’t it make one an unsympathetic, condescending cynic?” asks the exhibition curator Jiří Ptáček.

Jiří Thýn employs in his work the potential of installation, text and video. He explores the possibilities of photography and tests the boundaries between the photographed and the seen. He makes use of graphic programmes and modifies the photographs on the border between photography and painting. He studies themes such as space and composition. He does not provide answers, he examines and contemplates images of misery, death and destruction.

Jiří Thýn (*1977) is a leading Czech post-conceptual photographer. In 2005 he graduated from the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague (Studio of Photography, under Prof. Pavel Štecha) and completed an internship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Studio of Painting II led by Vladimír Skrepl). He was a founding member of the Ládví group which operated on a voluntary basis advocating the protection of the public space on the local housing estate. He was twice a finalist for the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize (2011, 2012). He teaches at the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem and at Scholastica in Prague. He is represented by the hunt kastner gallery in Prague. Jiří Thýn has had solo exhibitions in the House of Photography, GHMP, Prague (2021), the House of Arts, Brno (2017) and the House of Arts, České Budějovice (2012). He has also taken part in many collective exhibitions, among others, in the Czech Center, New York (2019) and in the Rudolfinum Gallery, Prague (2011). The exhibition Love Life is his second in the Fait Gallery, Brno. He first presented his work there in 2015 at the exhibition Two Ends of Distance – Images that Never Happened.
